Mistakes - a misnomer

Updated: Apr 4

Mistakes - a misnomer within the performance world that results in performance barriers. It is actually a gift, a gift of perspective.

Mistakes are an inevitable part of any sport or performance. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned professional, you’re bound to mess up at some point. It can be frustrating and even demoralizing to make mistakes, but it’s important to remember that they’re an essential part of the learning process. In fact, mistakes can help you improve and become a better athlete or performer. The key is to learn how to overcome them.

The mistakes are always a performance barrier when not processed appropriately, the key here is to understand what is involved in processing it in a way that feels - its a gift, a gift of perspective.

#1 Acknowledge the mistake

The first step in overcoming a mistake is to acknowledge that it happened. It’s important to accept responsibility for your actions and understand that you are the only one responsible for what happened. You can’t fix it if you cannot see it. This means taking a moment to reflect on what happened, and being honest with yourself about where things did not go down the way you wanted. Ask yourself what you could have done differently and what you can learn from the experience. Most are stuck at this; as they equate the mistake to how they aren't good enough - which is a slippery slope.

#2 Focus on the process

Once you’ve acknowledged your mistake, are aware and understand what actually happened, it’s time to focus on the next step. Instead of dwelling on the mistake, think about what you can do more effectively next time. This may mean going back and practicing the skill or technique that you struggled with or working with a coach or mentor to develop a plan for improvement. By focusing on this, you’ll be able to move forward.

#3 Learning is the only constant

The gift is always the learning experience. They give you the opportunity to reflect on what happened and identify areas for change. This is especially important in sports and performance, where small changes can have a big impact on your overall performance. By learning, you can make adjustments. This may mean changing your approach or developing a new strategy, but the end result will be a more polished and effective performance. Recognize that it is a normal part of the learning process, and that every athlete and performer faces challenges along the way.

#4 Seek Help When Needed

No athlete or performer is an island. Sometimes, you need the help of others to overcome mistakes and improve your performance. This may mean working with a coach or mentor who can offer guidance and feedback, or seeking support from friends and family who can offer encouragement and motivation. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help when you need it. It’s a sign of strength, not weakness, and can be a valuable part of the learning process.

#5 Conclusion

Mistakes are an inevitable part of sports and performance. But, they can also be valuable opportunities for growth and improvement. By acknowledging the mistake, focusing on the solution, and learning from the experience, you can overcome anything. Seek help when needed, and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a better athlete or performer. Remember, it’s not about mistakes, but rather about learning how use them as stepping stones to success - the gift of perspective.
