Every athlete is able to perform when the stakes are non-existent, however, unable to show up in the big moments, high stakes situation. Which category do you fall in?
Consistency is the key to success in any sport or performance. It separates the best from the rest. While some athletes are able to produce peak performances in crucial moments, the most successful ones are those who can perform at their best every time they step up to the plate, field, court or stage. Whether you are a professional athlete or a performer, achieving consistency in crucial moments is crucial to becoming successful in your field.
The following strategies that can help you perform consistently in the big moments.
1. Embrace the pressure
Most athletes and performers tend to feel nervous or anxious when faced with high-pressure situations. But instead of looking at pressure as a negative feeling or an obstacle, one should embrace it as a challenge, the obstacle is the way. Pressure is a sign that something important is happening, and that means there is something significant about to occur. The goal should be to accept that pressure and channel it into a frequency energy that can fuel your performance. Remember - pressure is not external to you, its within. You have the power to dial up or down the perceived pressure.
2. Practice with purpose
One of the most important factors in achieving consistency is practicing with purpose. The more you practice and the more you put yourself in situations which might be beyond your control, the better prepared you will be for those moments on game day. It is important to design your training with specific goals in mind and to make sure that every practice session is focused and intense. Practice does not make perfect, it does make permanent though.
3. Create a routine
Creating a routine, structure will help you prepare yourself mentally and physically for crucial moments. A pre-performance routine can include things like visualizing your success, taking deep breaths, listening to music, or any activity that makes you feel calm, focused, and centered. A consistent routine can help you feel more confident and prepared in high-pressure situations. I use the analogy of mindfully eating an apple, to bring them back to the moment - when I work with my athletes.
4. Focus on the process
Be fully committed to the process & totally unattached to the outcome. The separation of process & outcome will always help you be in the now. By the mere nature of adopting this shift, you will start paying attention to the details of your performance, such as your technique, form, and execution. When you focus on the process, you are less likely to get distracted or overwhelmed by the pressure of a crucial moment which in turn enables you to show up - focused.
5. Anchor yourself on the 'why'
A critical & essential element in achieving consistency in crucial moments. It involves developing the why behind what you do & how you do it. If the "WHY" is not strong enough the "WHAT" & "HOW" would not matter. The "WHY" would always be your path to getting more of what you want; in this instance - show up to the best of your ability.
# Conclusion
In conclusion, performing consistently in crucial moments is essential for success in any sport or performance. Embracing pressure, practicing with purpose, creating a routine, focusing on the process, and anchoring yourself of the "WHY" are all strategies that can help you achieve consistency in high-pressure situations. With these strategies, you can achieve your goals and become the best in your field.
